Why does your campsite matter?
The perfect campsite can make or break your experience. It is crucial when camping to to select a campground and campsite that meets your needs and desires. Today, you will learn 7 easy steps to take when selecting a campsite so you can have a perfect adventure.
The Basics
Before you can select the best campsite, you need to first decide what park you will camp at. Personally, I love the state park systems and am very inclined to use them as my first choice. They are safe, have many amenities, and have really well marked trail systems.
Be sure to investigate what activities your park offers. Kayaking, fishing, hiking, bird watching, swimming, and more activities are right at your fingertips at many state parks. Once you select your park, you are ready to start finding your dream campsite.
1) Grade of Site
Simply put, the grade of a site is how steep the slope is. This is a large aspect to consider both when tent camping and RV camping. The last thing you want is to fight rolling out of bed all night after a long day of hiking.
The grade of a site can be found on most site listings. For example, I went to the Indiana State Park page and found this site to the right. This spot is listed as a “slight” driveway grade. This means that there is a minimal slant to the drive.
If you have a camper or RV, the grade is of moderate concern. Often times, you are able to level out your camper with leveling blocks. These are small foam block that you can drive onto.
If you are tent camping, the grade matters a lot more. There is no ideal way to level out your tent. This means that researching your campsite before booking is so crucial.

Anything more than a slight grade is not ideal for tent camping. I like to look at a picture of the entire campsite to get a good idea of what the grade looks like in the grassy area as well. Many campsite listings will only show the driveway grade. For tents, the grassy areas matter more for the ideal campsite.
